Innovative UK-based company ROLI has announced the launch of 'Piano', a new music-learning keyboard designed to provide a comprehensive and intelligent system for both beginners and seasoned musicians. The instrument features 49 full-sized keys equipped with ROLI's BrightKey light-up system, which guides users by illuminating the keys to indicate which notes to play next.
Each key offers per-note pitch bend and polyphonic aftertouch, allowing for expressive control, such as bending individual notes within a chord—a hallmark of ROLI's renowned Seaboard products. The integration of these features aims to make learning and playing more intuitive and engaging.
The system is powered by ROLI's AI Assistant, designed to help users get started, teach music history and theory, and provide useful prompts on new concepts to learn. The keys can glow to display different scales, chords, arpeggios, and more, enabling users to practice music theory without the need to read sheet music.
Connectivity options for the ROLI Piano include USB-C for computer connection and Bluetooth MIDI for wireless integration. It also features a MIDI output for direct hardware connections and a sustain pedal input to add more expression to performances. The keyboard is compatible with all major Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and offers up to six hours of battery life, enhancing its portability.
The ROLI Piano is currently available at an introductory price of £319, with a planned increase to £548 in the future. Additionally, ROLI offers a bundle that includes the Piano and the ROLI Airwave for £798. The Airwave is a multifunctional device that serves as both an AI-powered music teacher and a digital theremin, providing instructional guidance and allowing advanced musicians to manipulate sound effects through hand movements above the keys.
This release underscores ROLI's commitment to blending technology and music education, offering tools that cater to a wide range of users, from novices to experienced musicians. Check it out on ROLI's official website here.
