Since his debut in 2022, Greek-born DJ and producer Jhojho has carved a path through the underground house scene with impressive speed. Gaining support from industry heavyweights like MK, Mau P, and Low Steppa, his unique sound has already made waves. With releases on Detlef’s Issues label and his BBC Radio 1-supported collaboration ‘Shut Up!’ with the label head, Jhojho’s career is steadily rising. Now, he’s marking a significant milestone with his debut on the iconic Hot Creations label, releasing the captivating single ‘Horny’ – a track that pays homage to Mousse T.’s timeless house anthem. For Jhojho, joining Hot Creations is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. “After following the label for a long time, it feels surreal to be joining the Hot Creations family and that Jamie embraced my sound,” he says. “The idea behind ‘Horny’ was to create a simple but effective modern groove with a classic vocal, and I’m glad to have worked with Mizbee, who did an amazing job on the vocals.”
The track, which Jamie Jones has already championed, boasts thick, driving drum kicks, booming low-ends, and sultry pitched-down vocals from Mizbee. The funky backdrop builds effortlessly, creating a track that is nostalgic and fresh. “I always love to play around and experiment with vocals as most of the times vocals play a key role in my music,” explains Jhojho. “As soon as I decided to pitch down the vocals, somehow everything came up naturally. I wanted to create a modern minimal groove while keeping the vibe from such a timeless vocal.”
The success of ‘Horny’ is made all the more significant by Jamie Jones’ support at high-profile events, including the legendary Paradise at Amnesia in Ibiza. “Getting support from artists like Jamie Jones always boosts your morale and confidence,” Jhojho shares. “Seeing him play ‘Horny’ at key dates across summer, including Paradise at Amnesia and Lovefest 2024, was something that really encouraged me to work even harder in the studio.”
It’s clear that Jhojho’s journey to this point hasn’t been easy, but his dedication to evolving his sound has been key. “Since my early days as a DJ, I’ve been a big fan of artists like Louie Vega, Dennis Ferrer, Phil Weeks,” he says. “Dance music moves forward rapidly these days, but every time I listen to a classic house record from the 90s or 00s, it hits totally different. That’s why I can never say no to a 909 open hi-hat, for example.”
Much of Jhojho’s musical growth has been influenced by his role as the head of his label, Techords. Drawing on his experience as an A&R at Daylight Robbery Records, he’s cultivated a strong network and a keen ear for fresh talent. “Listening to music from other producers always influences me in a positive way,” he says. “For me, two of the most important things in running a record label are keeping a tight schedule and approaching artists in a kind, friendly, and professional way.”
Looking back on his summer, Jhojho reflects on the importance of moments shared with friends, such as playing with Detlef at the Issues label night during Sonar Festival in Barcelona. “Traveling to play your music is always nice, but when you do it with your best mate, it’s totally different,” he says with a smile.
As Jhojho continues to rise in the industry, the future is looking brighter than ever. “Definitely the most important reward so far was when Jamie messaged me, saying that he wanted to sign ‘Horny’ on Hot Creations,” he recalls. “That day will help me in the future to keep pushing with my music.”
With exciting collaborations on the horizon, including EPs with Detlef on Take Notes and Moan, and a solo single set for release in January 2025, Jhojho is poised to make even more waves in the electronic dance music scene. “I’ve been working a lot in the studio these past few months, and I already have a few releases scheduled for 2025,” he reveals. “The first one is a solo single release on my imprint Techords, dropping early in January.”
Jhojho’s journey is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and ability to push his sound forward while honouring the roots of house music. With ‘Horny’ on Hot Creations, it’s clear that this is just the beginning for this rising star.
