Interview: Legendary house duo Amine Edge & DANCE let us into their world

We welcome revered house duo Amine Edge & DANCE, renowned for their modern house cuts on labels such as Defected, Nervous, and their own imprint CUFF. Up next is their debut on Jamie Jones and Lee Foss’ Hot Creations label, with a sun-drenched soulful house number featuring Pershard Owens on vocals and brother-sister duo Shermanology on remix duties.

We had the pleasure of finding out more about the men behind the countless house cuts they have graced us with over the years. Thanks for joining us guys - Firstly love the new single, it oozes style, charisma and most importantly soul! How did the single come together?

AE&D: Thank you for having us and for your kind words about the track. The influence behind this track is quite simple. During our teenage years, we were avid listeners of R'n'B music. It was during this time that we stumbled upon the incredible classic from Carl Thomas, "I Wish." We found that it meshed wonderfully with a house beat, much like "Good Time," which was released on Defected a few years ago. Born and raised in the South of France, how has the music scene in Marseille influenced your music and career? AE&D: We believe that, regardless of where we were living at the time, our formative years were deeply influenced by all things American. From American movies to American House and Rap music, Style...It all originated in the United States. Despite our love for Marseille, we always had a sense that we didn't quite fit in there. What were your earliest memories of music growing up? AE&D: Amine Edge's family home featured what we referred to as a parabolic antenna, a device that captured channels from around the world. During that time, every Arabic family had one, making it quite a significant presence. This ingenious contraption included German channels and broadcasted weekend TV shows like Berlin House and House TV on VIVA. It was in this environment that Amine's musical journey began. Late nights on the weekend, Amine couldn't resist being captivated by the diverse range of music emanating from these channels. Despite being compelled to sleep at such a young age and hour, he had no choice but to sneak in and watch. It was during these illicit viewing sessions that he discovered artists like Aphex Twin, The Prodigy, and the Chemical Brothers. On the other hand, DANCE’s musical influences primarily came from MTV and radio shows in France. Shows like "The Lick" hosted by Trevor Nelson and "Yo! MTV Raps" played a pivotal role in shaping his knowledge and love for Rap and R'n'B. Here, he had the opportunity to immerse himself in new music videos and timeless classics, refining his passion for these genres.

As you pursued music as a career, was there a defining moment or achievement that sticks out as the turning point?

AE&D: All those years of hard work and dedication prepared us for what was to come. Around 2011, things started to change for the better. Our music started getting noticed by both regular listeners and industry professionals.

The big moment came when Solomun signed one of our songs. It became a massive hit and was played by DJs from different music styles. After that, we got the chance to remix songs for famous artists like Nina Kraviz, Adana Twins, Andy C, Tiga, and more. We also made some songs that people still love today, like "Lost" and "Halfway Crooks." Thanks to these achievements and collaborations, we were able to make a lasting name for ourselves in the music world. Any new artists we should be watching out for? AE&D: I recommend keeping an eye on those artists who consistently release amazing music: Ammo Avenue, Bastian Bux, Beltran, Dec Duffy, E.R.N.E.S.T.O., Fleur Shore, Fourth Phase, Goosey, Josh Kalker, Manda Moor, Mene, Sorley, Toby Simpson.

You guys are regularly traveling all over the world - what has been your favourite country to play In? AE&D: When you've been fortunate enough to travel to over 60 countries, you discover something you love in almost each of them. Brazil, of course, holds a special place in our hearts. In fact, Amine spends about half of his time in Rio where he lives and the other half in Lisbon. The UK also has a special spot in our hearts because of its vibrant audience and deep appreciation for House Music. Cities like Los Angeles, Tokyo, London, Manchester, Curitiba, and Sao Paulo have left a lasting impression on us throughout our careers. Lastly, what does the rest of 2023 look like for Amine Edge & DANCE - any exclusives you can share with us? ;) AE&D: Following the release of this EP on Hot Creations, our next two releases will be on Black Book, (Feat. Hugel) which is Chris Lake's label. and the other will be on Saved, Nic Fanciulli's label. Can’t say more for now.

Thanks for taking the time out to chat with us and we hope to see you on a dancefloor very soon!
