Interview: DJ S.K.T Shares His Creative Process and Career Insights

Over the last decade, Stephen Kenny Tempest, aka DJ S.K.T, has joined the dots between club sounds and chart success, releasing on majors such as Sony and Virgin, as well as underground imprints like Strictly Rhythm and Club Sweat. He hosts a tastemaking radio show on the mighty KISS FM, merging elements of tech house, garage and deep house, as shown through his latest single ‘Molly’ on Lee Foss’ South of Saturn. You can download/stream it here: https://orcd.co/sos087.

‘Molly’ is crafted for the dancefloor with its super-sized chunky drums and twisted synth flavours. A raw vocal loop amps up the groove with the razor-sharp percussion, ensuring maximum impact. Add in an array of FX and drum fills, and you have a party-pumping house cut that never lets up.

In celebration of his latest release, we caught up with DJ S.K.T for a chat about his past, present and future:

Thanks for joining us! Where are you writing to us from, and what have you been up to recently?

I’m currently back in the UK after a crazy summer of touring and have been spending the last few weeks working on new music in the studio.

What can you tell us about your journey into music?

I started DJing at 13 when I entered the Technics DMC under 18’s competition. I ended up coming fourth in the country and from then on, I was hooked and started to learn how to produce too.

How do you effectively promote yourself as an artist?

I try and do this via the music by standing out and trying to be unique with ideas and productions. Getting to play music at live gigs is always a good testing ground too!

What can you tell us about 'Molly'?

‘Molly’ was a track I originally made for my own sets and to play out over the summer at gigs and festivals, and it was going down so sick I started to give it to a few DJs. It then got picked up by South Of Saturn for an official release!

What has the feedback been like from your latest release?

Feedback on the track has been amazing, and we’ve picked up some great international DJ & radio support.

What keeps your mental health together?

Meditation!

What can you tell us about your creative flow?

It can vary, although usually I start with a beat or groove and then build melody & vocal on top, but sometimes it’s the other way around too!

What advice do you have for other artists?

Consistency and passion for what you do. Success will follow

What is your biggest goal this year, and how close are you to achieving it?

My biggest goal this year is to be able to visit and tour new territories and countries that I haven’t played in before!

Lastly, what can we expect from S.K.T over the rest of 2023 and into 2024?

I’m currently working on so much new music that I’m really excited about, a lot more club focused stuff that has been going down really well in my sets, which I’m planning to release next year.
