Gardna: The Genre-Defying Maestro of Bristol’s Sound System Culture

Gardna

From the heart of Bristol emerges an artist whose roots run deep within the rhythmic and bass-heavy veins of the city’s rich musical tapestry. Gardna, synonymous with genre-defying soundscapes and electric live performances, has carved out a unique niche in the global music scene. As an MC, songwriter, prolific collaborator, host, and promoter, Gardna is a lifelong ambassador of good vibes. His ability to fuse elements across the sound system spectrum into unique rhythmic blends channels the essence of Bristol’s diverse musical heritage, earning him critical praise worldwide.

In a recent conversation, Gardna reflected on his musical journey and the influences shaping his distinctive sound. “Yes, guys, it’s a pleasure too,” he began. “I have been doing music for a minute. I grew up on Glastobury Festival, and found my love for the bass weight in Bristol. This music and culture coming out of this city is phenomenal.” His early experiences at iconic Bristol raves such as The Blast, Tokyo Dub, Who Cares, Wonkavision, and ASBO Disco laid the groundwork for his eclectic musical taste. “I’m a typical southwest baby,” he mused, underscoring his deep connection to the region’s vibrant music culture.

Gardna’s live performances are a testament to his dedication to creating an unforgettable experience for his audience. “This year, we’re stripping it back to just me and a DJ,” he shared. “I create the sets; we finalise them together. A blend of my tunes and current and classic club bangers. Come check it out for yourself.” This stripped-back approach highlights his confidence in his music and his ability to connect with his fans on a deeper level.

As he gears up for Under and Charlie Tee’s Unitee party, Gardna’s enthusiasm is palpable. “Firstly, I just wanna say I love Charlie Tee; what a don, doing so much for DNB right now. I can’t wait to rave under that bridge. I’ve seen what Under is doing, and it looks AMAZING.” The unique setting and stunning art installations offer a personalised and out-of-the-box experience. For Gardna, it’s a nostalgic nod to his southwest free party roots. “It’s very nice to see Under doing it properly,” he remarked, appreciating the blend of tradition and innovation in the event’s setup.

Gardna’s connection to the drum and bass scene is undeniable. “I’ve always been pushing a multi-genre flex, but all my friends make Drum and Bass. It’s so deeply rooted into what I do as Gardna,” he explained. He sees drum and bass as a genre and a feeling and energy that drives his music. “I’m really here for people pushing the boundaries of the sound. We pay our respect to the past and present, but there are NO rules.”

Gardna’s message was clear and encouraging when asked about advice for up-and-coming artists: “Do your thing. Keep pushing. We need to make new sounds to keep reaching new heights. It’s all about the music. Make good music; good things follow.” This ethos is reflected in his career, where he thrives in large festival settings and more intimate shows. “I love intimate shows, but moreover, I love massive shows, to be honest. It’s what I live for. More people, the better.”

Looking ahead, Gardna is focused on releasing his third album and making it a success. “Manifesting a massive year next year,” he declared, with plans for more massive festival gigs and an O2 tour with Mungo’s before the album drop. As he continues to innovate and inspire, Gardna remains a vibrant force in the music scene, embodying the spirit of Bristol’s sound system culture and pushing it to new heights.
