Artist Spotlight: KLP [Medium Rare, Higher Ground, MicroHertz]

KLP

Sydney’s multifaceted talent, KLP - Kristy Lee Peters to her friends and family - recently unveiled a 5-track EP ‘Alter,’ on Medium Rare Recordings. The spotlight track, ‘Come Thru,’ is yet another jewel in her crown, adding to a career already glittering with platinum records and ARIA Award nominations. Known for her collaborations with industry giants like Skrillex, Loods, and Airwolf and releases on iconic labels such as Ministry of Sound, Ultra, and Warner Music, KLP’s ascent in the music world shows no signs of slowing.

‘Alter’ is a vibrant follow-up to a series of electrifying singles. Tracks like the high-octane ‘Symphony,’ the adrenaline-pumping ‘Never Let Me Down,’ and the frenetic ‘Vitamin’ have received enthusiastic support from Mixmag, SiriusXM, and Triple J, cementing KLP’s reputation for crafting infectious dance anthems. The EP’s standout, ‘Come Thru,’ delivers a nostalgic punch with its 90s-inspired chunky piano chords, sharp percussion, and pitch-shifted vocals, making it a must-have for any dancefloor. Meanwhile, ‘I Know’ slows things down with a sultry vocal over breakbeats and kicking drums, embodying the EP’s carefree and energetic spirit.

Beyond the beats, KLP is also known for her philanthropy. She co-founded ‘Ricochet Ball,’ a charity netball event launched in 2018, which unites the Australian music industry for a day of fun, sport, music, and fundraising in a drug and alcohol-free setting. This year’s event, held on June 14th, raised over AUD 40,000 for charity.

Balancing her roles as a DJ, producer, songwriter, and vocalist, KLP doesn’t see it as a juggling act. “They all work together,” she explains. “I produce and write songs and then often sing on the same tracks. So it’s a really nice combination of skills that allow me to be really productive and work quickly and independently.”

A recent trip to Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) rekindled her creative spark after the isolation of Australia’s strict COVID-19 lockdowns. “It just lit me up, and the ideas came flowing,” she shared, reflecting on how the experience inspired ‘Alter.’

One of her most memorable collaborations has been with fellow Australian producer Loods. Their partnership began over Instagram DMs, leading to a prolific body of work. “He works fast (like me), and it was just a fun pair-up that seemed so easy,” she noted. Despite the distance, their synergy was immediate and remains strong.

KLP ensures her tracks resonate with live audiences, testing each one on the dancefloor. “As long as I can play it at a show for a dancefloor, then it works for me,” she says. If a track doesn’t connect live, it’s back to the drawing board.

She draws inspiration from the burgeoning success of Australian artists like Dom Dolla and Fisher. “I find it so inspiring watching people like Dom Dolla and Fisher absolutely smashing it all around the world. I can’t wait to see more Australians doing the same,” she enthuses.

KLP’s creative process is fluid, varying from track to track. Sometimes, a voice note sparks an entire production; other times, it’s a beat or concept. “I wish I could say there was one particular way I went about it, but it changes from track to track,” she admits.

Throughout her career, she has learned the value of trusting her instincts, working hard, and surrounding herself with positive people. “Trust your gut, work hard and surround yourself with nice people,” she advises - principles shaping her approach to music production and collaboration.

She acknowledges the role of technology and digital platforms in music but emphasises the importance of post-production strategy. “Although it’s incredible to have the immediacy of being able to put music out digitally, it can mean there isn’t much thought into how to actually get people to listen,” she says. Aspiring producers should invest in strategies to reach the right audience.

Her experiences with labels like Ministry of Sound and Ultra Records have taught her that a song’s impact hinges on its connection with listeners. “I think it all comes down to the song and how it connects with people,” she explains. “If you have a song that connects, it’s going to make an impact.”

In a trend-driven industry, KLP remains true to her musical identity through resilience and self-awareness. “Years of Nos, dead ends, and having to build up a thick skin and solid resilience have meant that I really know who I am,” she shares. “So I just do me and let everything else float around me.”

KLP’s ‘Alter’ EP is a testament to her creativity, passion, and dedication to dance music. Her journey continues to evolve, and her story remains one to watch.
